The Building Community through the Arts Humboldt Park School Engagement Initiative recognizes that the arts and culture of the neighborhood are central to developing vibrant, creative, and sustainable communities, and to fostering connections between artists and schools. This project will lead to a future when:

• all students engage artists in their education to develop cultural pride, understanding of their own cultures and other cultures, and knowledge of their cultural histories;

• all students engage artists in their education to develop critical and creative thinking skills, and to improve their academic achievement;

• all students engage artists in their education to actively contribute to community development;

• Humboldt Park teachers, school administrators and parents recognize artists as playing key roles in the development of children and the development of communities;

• Teaching artists receive the professional development they need to enact their roles as essential “connectors” between neighborhood schools and community development;

• policy makers, business leaders, and stakeholders in the community value artists and arts education as essential to creating a just a society.
